A reed diffuser is a quiet thing. No flame, no switch. Just a slow, steady scent that lives in the room. There's not much to do once it finds its place on a shelf, but a few small habits keep it doing its job better, and for longer. Here's what we've learned from making them, and from watching ours sit on console tables and bookshelves for years.
Where to place it
Eye-level or just below works best. Scent moves up and outwards, so a console table, a low bookshelf, or a hallway cabinet are natural homes. A bedside table works too, though the throw is more concentrated there.
Keep it out of direct sunlight. UV fades the oil and can shift the colour over time. The same goes for radiators, fireplaces and AC vents: heat and forced air cause uneven evaporation, so the diffuser thins out faster than it should.
If the surface is finished wood or stone, sit the bottle on a small coaster or tray. A stray drip during a flip won't ruin anything that way.
Flipping the reeds
The first flip happens on day one, the moment you open the bottle, so both ends saturate. After that, once a week is plenty. Always do it over a tray or a piece of paper, since the reeds drip.
Flip more often, every three or four days, if you want a stronger throw. Flip less often, every two weeks, if you want to stretch the lifespan. There's no wrong answer. The diffuser adapts to the rhythm you give it.
How long it lasts
Most diffusers run eight to twelve weeks, depending on room size, airflow, and how often you flip. A 100ml diffuser suits rooms up to about 25 square metres. For larger rooms, place two of them, or pick a bigger volume.
The first week smells brightest, since the reeds are fully loaded. The middle weeks settle in, and the scent reads more rounded. The final weeks soften, then quietly fade out.
When to replace the reeds
Reeds clog with dust and dried oil after four to six weeks. Swap them for fresh ones and you'll notice the throw pick up almost immediately. Don't reuse reeds across different scents, they hold the previous one and muddy whatever comes next.
Safety and handling
Keep out of reach of children and pets. The reeds aren't meant to be lit. Wash your hands after handling them, and if oil spills on a finished surface, wipe it off straight away with a dry cloth.
Storing an unopened diffuser
A cool, dark cupboard with the lid sealed will keep an unopened diffuser fresh for twelve to eighteen months. Once you open it, the timer starts.
