And yet! The whole idea was started by Sonora Smart Dodd.
After her mother's death, Dodd's father took it upon himself to raise her and her siblings.
Reading about Anna Jarvis's successful attempt to establish Mother's Day, Dodd thought: "For half a minute, shouldn't dads get some love too?"
Dodd originally proposed June 5, her father's birthday, but the celebration had to be postponed due to several scheduling issues.
Finally the first Father's Day in history, at least as we know it today, was finally celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910.
And now a very impressive fact: it took until 1972 for Father's Day to be recognized, first by the USA, during the administration of President Richard Nixon, and then by the majority of the Western world.
Better late than never, right?
When do we celebrate Father's Day?
Good question! In Greece, as in many other countries worldwide, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. For example, this year we will celebrate Father's Day on June 18!
But of course there is no fixed date, worldwide!
In fact, countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy celebrate "Día del Padre", "Dia do Pai" and "Festa del Papà" respectively on March 19, which also coincides with St. Joseph.
In Australia and New Zealand, Father's Day falls on the first Sunday in September.
